Safeguarding information for managers

There are times in your role as a manager when you may need advice and help on safeguarding issues.

The safeguarding team is responsible for developing and supporting the implementation of The Scout Association's child protection and anti-bullying policies. The majority of our work is proactive and involves providing advice and guidance to leaders locally.

Specific incidents

The safeguarding team is also responsible for supporting commissioners in dealing with specific incidents and complaints relating to our child protection policy. This could be in conjunction with the appropriate country headquarters staff.

If a concern about abuse is made known to you, if you have a concern about a young person’s safety or welfare, or if you receive a complaint or allegation about any adult (including yourself), you must contact the safeguarding team straight away.

This is regardless of whether scouting activities are involved and no matter how insignificant you may feel the issue to be. You must not investigate the matter yourself.

Contacting us

Initially, you should ring the safeguarding team on 0345 300 1818 or 0208 433 7164 (this includes an out-of-hours system for urgent calls). We understand that sometimes this will be a difficult call for you to make.

When you make contact with the safeguarding team to discuss a specific concern or complaint, we will discuss with you what support you require and it is likely that you will receive support directly from a safeguarding adviser, a specially trained member of headquarters staff.

Helpful information and guidance can be found in this YouTube or download video from Tim Kidd (Chief Commissioner of England) on dealing with suspensions in a safeguarding incident and running the process around it. The script for the video can also be downloaded and can be used as a useful tool in this situation.
